Afrobeats musician, Seun Kuti has finally been arrested after he turned himself in to the police at the Lagos State Command.
Seun who had been declared wanted for assaulting a uniformed police officer turned himself in this morning at the Ikeja Police Headquarters in company of his lawyer and family members. He was subsequently arrested and paraded in handcuffs
A statement by the Lagos State Police Command spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin (SP), confirmed the arrest.
This is the posted statement on social media:
“Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in company of his lawyer and family representative. He has been placed under arrest “
“In line with the law. The Command appreciates the public for their concern and assures that the ongoing investigation will be detailed, transparent, professionally pursued; and justice will be manifestly served for all parties involved”.
When asked by a commenter on social media why Seun was put in handcuffs, Hundeyin said “Because the law empowers us to place on cuffs any suspect who has shown propensity for violence and propensity for evading justice”.
Recall that policemen had gone to Seun Kuti’s residence on Allen Avenue, yesterday after the incident but met his absence. He was believed to have gone into hiding after the incident.
Seun was captured on video slapping and shoving a uniformed officer on the Third Mainland Bridge. Apparently, the incident was triggered by a traffic event and it showed Seun also yelling at his wife who appeared frightened in the video.
The officer did not respond and the incident prompted the Inspector General of Police(IGP) to order the arrest of Seun, who is the son of Afrobeats legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
The incident had received wide condemnation on social media with many commenters supporting the call for his arrest and giving a Big No to violence against law enforcement officials.
