Founder of DAAR Communications and AIT chairman, Raymond Dokpesi, is dead, according to family sources, Dokpesi died in an Abuja hospital where he was admitted and receiving medical attention. He took ill and suffered a stroke shortly after the 2023 Ramadan fast and was managing his state of health since then.
According to reports, he was electrocuted during a routine gym session, while using the gym equipment. The electric shock resulted in a stroke.
Raymond Dokpesi had recently faced health challenges that had impacted his personal life and his career. He first had a stroke in 2017, which resulted extensive medical care and rehabilitation.
Dokpesi and some members of his family tested positive for COVID-19 in 2020. he however survived and used his experience to raise awareness about the pandemic’s impact.
His son, Raymond Dokpesi (Jnr), announcing his death, wrote a statement revealing that the media entrepreneur died on Monday, May 29. He further disclosed that the family will release further details on the funeral arrangements in due course.
Raymond Dokpesi is a popular Nigerian businessman, politician and media mogul. He was born on October 25, 1951, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, and he is from Agenebode, Edo State. Dokpesi is the founder and chairman of Daar Communications PLC, a media conglomerate that owns and operates a number of Nigerian television and radio stations.
He established Africa Independent Television (AIT), Nigeria’s first private television network. Dokpesi’s entrepreneurial spirit was not limited to broadcasting. He also established Raypower FM, Nigeria’s first privately owned radio station, and the Nigerian Compass newspaper.
Raymond Dokpesi founded Daar Communications Plc in 1989, a media conglomerate that has grown to become one of Nigeria’s leading media organizations. The Africa Independent Television (AIT) network, one of Nigeria’s leading private television stations, is owned by Daar Communications. AIT is known for its extensive news coverage, entertaining programming, and thought-provoking documentaries.
Dokpesi was active in Nigerian politics in addition to his media ventures. He was a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) activist who held various positions within the party structure.
