The Speaker of The House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has threatened to issue a warrant of arrest on the Central Bank Governor (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, if he fails to appear before the house by Tuesday, next week.
Gbajabiamila was reacting to the continued ignoring of the House summons by Godwin Emefiele who they want to explain the issues sorrounding the Naira redesign.
The Cable reported that Alhassan Doguwa, the Majority Leader of the house had complained about the continued absense of Emefiele to answer questions on the issue.
Doguwa spoke after meeting with Managing Directors of Banks in Nigeria, which neither Emefiele nor his representatives were present.
Doguwa accussed Emefiele of telling lies about his continued absense and said he was disrespecting the House with his behavior.
He is quoted:
“I want to rule that the Central Bank of Nigeria through its chief executive, who is the governor of the central bank, has decided to flagrantly disregard and disrespect the institution of the legislature. And on this note, I would want to say that this committee will outrightly inform the house.
“Commercial banks are complaining, their customers are complaining, the economy is bleeding, and we go to the polls in these circumstances. I want to believe that somewhere, somehow, there is a dark horse behind the agenda and we will not allow that cause to continue to drag the success of our electoral process.
“By this position, the house of representatives is now compelled to recommend to Mr. speaker to go ahead and initiate the necessary instrumentality of the law to compel the governor of the central bank to appear before this constitutional committee”.
The new Naira and cash withdrawal limits introduced by the CBN has been attacked by many politicians who feel it is targeted at them. This feeling is felt more so since elections are barely weeks away, and the usual election spending has been curtailed by the new measures.
