Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice and Dr Obinna Obeta have been convicted of organ trafficking charges in the United Kingdom.
The court sitting at the Old Bailey in the UK, cleared Ekeweremadu’s daughter, Sonia of the same charge.
Ekweremadu and his wife were arrested at the airport in 2022 when they entered the United Kingdom.
The Ekweremadus and Dr. Obinna Obeta were accused of bringing into the UK, a 21 year old street trader from Lagos, to provide a kidney transplant for the ailing daughter of the Ekweremadus, Sonia.
The victim was promised substantial amount of money to provide the services.
The victim was rejected as unsuitable and the Ekweremadus were said to have started looking to Turkey to find another donor.
It is lawful to donate a kidney but it becomes a criminal issue when money or any other rewards are offered.
This guilty verdict on one of Nigeria’s top ranked and controversial politicians is certainly going to hit home. It is doubtful if a guilty verdict would have been achieved against him in a Nigerian court.
