Oyibo Chukwu, the Labour Party Senatorial candidate for Enugu East has been shot dead on Wednesday by unknown gunmen who opened fire on vehicles in his convoy.
Five of his supporters were also reportedly killed and their bodies were set ablaze.
The Punch Newspaper reported that the Enugu State Labour Party gubernatorial candidate, Chijioke Edeoga confirmed the news. Edeoga is reported as saying this was an assasination by political parties that are threatened by the rise of the Labour Party in the state in the National elections slated for February 25th.
The South East region of Nigeria has in the last couple of months been associated with violence and terrorism blamed on unknown gunmen. There are fears about how this phenomenon would affect voter turn out in the upcoming elections.
