Lionel Messi is set to ditch Paris St Germain (PSG) and team up in the Saudi League for a staggering £320million annual salary. The mega deal is reportedly being arranged by the Saudi Arabian government to boost the profile of the oil rich state in global sports.
Already, Messi’s Manager who is also his father, Jorge Messi, has informed PSG about the planned intention of Messi not to sign a new deal with the French team.
PSG had earlier in the week suspended Messi for two weeks for taking an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia and both parties have now agreed to part ways at the end of the season this Summer.
This mega deal for Messi would make him the highest paid athlete in the world and would more than double the deal given to Christiano Ronaldo by Saudi club, Al-Nassr in 2022.
Messi would effectively become a free agent in the Summer and can sign for any club in the world. However, his salary demands means just a handful of clubs would be able to afford the Argentinian maestro on their books.
Messi and Saudi Arabia
Messi is currently a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia in a deal that earns him £25m annually.
In related news, fans of PSG have stormed the Paris home of another of their mega stars, Neymar. The fans were demonstrating in front of Neymar’s home asking that he too leave the club in the Summer.
The clubs policy of getting the most talented attackers in the world has not paid off with fans feeling the lack of commitment from Neymar and Messi. PSG have failed to be win the Champions League in several tries despite spending huge sums on attracting and maintaining their Galactico star studded team.
Many watchers believe PSG are better off holding on to just Kylian Mbappe and building the team around the talented young French striker.
Recall that Messi joined PSG from Spanish giants, Barcelona in 202. At Barcelona he won a record 34 trophies including 3 European Champions League titles and 10 La Liga titles.
