Labour Party wins it’s first gubernatorial seat as Dr. Alex Otti of Labour Party has been declared winner of Abia State, Governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The result was declared by Prof Nnenna Oti, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO).
Otti, the former managing director of Diamond Bank (Access Bank ), polled 175,467 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Okey Ahiwe of the PDP who polled 88,529 votes.
This would be the first Governorship election to be announced for the emergent Labour Party and its band of “Obidient” supporters.
Since the advent of democracy in Nigeria in 1999, Abia State has been ruled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The state is viewed as one of the most critically affected states characterized by poor governance. Its famous commercial hub, Aba, is in shambles with hardly any passable roads connecting the suburbs of the commercial city.
Otti is widely looked upon as the person to rejig the economy of the state and boost its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). He comes in with goodwill and support from a wide spectrum of the State. The outgoing Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, has called on the other candidates to spare Otti the distraction of litigation at the election tribunal.
