The Labour Party has protested the exclusion of the party’s logo on ballot papers printed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for the polls in both Lagos and Ondo State.
The party has asked INEC to include its party logo on all ballot papers where it has been omitted or postpone the elections until the errors are corrected.
The Labour Party had noticed that its logo was omitted on Senatorial and House of Representatives ballot papers in Lagos and Ondo states.
The omission of the logo a major political party like Labour Party in Lagos state does not seem like an ordinary error.
The party had complained about the bias shown by the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the State, Olusegun Agbaje.
The Lagos State Labour Party Chairperson, Dayo Ekong had called the omission a malicious error and said it was a wicked way of disenfranchising the electorate in Lagos state. Ekong said further checks on the INEC website revealed that the names of Labour Party candidates for Lagos state were not uploaded despite valid court orders submitted to INEC and acknowledgements given.
The same omission was noticed in Ondo state for Ondo Central Senatorial District and five House of Representative seats, namely Okitipupa/Irele, Ese-Odo/Ilaje, Akoko Southwest/Akoko Southeast, Ondo East/Ondo West and Akure North/Akure South.
It is not clear how INEC intends to fix these errors as the elections are billed to start in a few hours time.
The Labour Party has been the surprise party of the campaign with its presidential candidate pulling unprecedented crowds at rallies and reviving the interest of the youthful population in national elections.
