  • Serbian Beat Daniil Medvedev in Straight Sets 6-3, 7-6, 6-3

Novak Djokovic made history on Sunday in New York City by claiming his 4th US Open Title at Flushing Meadows.

The controversial 36 year old has now claimed his 24th Grand Slam title.

Recall that Djokovic was banned from the 2022 edition of the competition for his refusal to take the COVID-19 vaccination which was required for all visitors to the United States.

This was not an easy victory despite the straight sets. Medvedev had previously beaten Djokovic in the same US Open Finals in 2021. However, the Serbian player was determined to make history and capture the title.

He forced the Russian Medvedev to retreat from his traditional style of standing far back from the court where he can hit the balls with a clear range.
This tactic seemed to work as it forced the Russian into making early mistakes which Djokovic capitalized on take the first set, 6-3.

The second set was a much drawn out affair with the Serbian still managing to triumph with a 7-6 win.

Djokovic showed his class in the third set with a 6-3 win to end the tournament.

After his victory, Djokovic paid tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, the former Los Angeles Lakers star.
Djokovic wore a “Mamba Mentality” shirt to receive his prize, and described Kobe as one of his closest friends who he relied on the most.

He said the number 24 was the one was by Kobe and he decided to wear it to acknowledge the fallen star basketballer.

Earlier on Saturday, 19 year old American, Coco Gauff had taken her first Grand Slam title with 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Aryana Sabalenka.
