A Rivers state police officer was filmed assaulting an unknown young man in the outskirts of Port Harcourt, Rivers state capital. In the viral video from the Punch Newspapers, the officer was seen using a cane to flog the man while throwing slaps at intervals.
“Why are you flogging me? Did I steal?” the young man asks the officer in Nigerian pidgin.
The man retaliated by collecting the cane from the officer who then proceeded to slap him on the face, twice and then ordered him to walk to his car.
A second police officer was also seen harassing the man’s female companion.
The video has since gone viral and Nigerians are dishing their fair comments concerning the cruel way the young man and his friend were treated by the police. This has also prompted the question, can police brutality ever stop in Nigeria?
Recall that such similar incidents of police brutality led to the nationwide EndSars protest in 2020.
