Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has commented about the 2023 general elections, describing the elections as a show of shame which has divided Nigeria more than we ever thought .
Obasanjo said this at an event in Abuja on Thursday, April 6. He urged the incoming administration to put measures in place that would foster National reconciliation amongst Nigerians.
OBJ said the government needs to make a concerted effort into rescuing a nation that has been plunged into dystopia.
Here is an excerpt from Obasanjo’s statement:
“Judging from what happened during the election, Nigeria is now even more divided and more corroded than we thought. This is a very important obligation on any administration preparing to take over from the current one, they have to in a matter of urgency facilitate the process of national moral rearrangement and national reconciliation for the aggrieved youths, and that is the only way the youths can be assuaged. This must be done in sync with the imperative of national value orientation that Nigeria requires to build a collective sense of enduring and local values and national belonging”.
OBJ went on to remind Nigerians that he was too old to stay silent and watch Nigeria wallow in present and potential corruption. He pleaded for all patriots of the nation to put hands together in other to rescue Nigeria from intending doom.
The 2023 presidential elections was characterized by ethnic profiling, violence and outright rigging which deepened the regional divisions in the country. Lagos State in particular, witnessed targeted violence meant to suppress voter turnout from a particular voting block.
