Says Ihedioha Afraid To Take On Uzodinma
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has accused Emeka Ihedioha of withdrawing from the Imo State gubernatorial race simply because he was afraid of facing the incumbent Governor Hope Uzodinma.
Wike spoke today in Port Harcourt with journalists from ChannelsTV
Recall that Ihedioha made a sudden withdrawal in the race for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial ticket even when he had only one contestant to contend with. The other contestant, Samuel Anyanwu, is the National Secretary of the PDP.
Ihedioha is a former speaker of the Federal House of Representatives and won the Imo State Governorship election in 2019 but was removed by the Supreme Court.
Ihedioha, in is withdrawal letter, said he had made a decision to align with the state PDP’s request for a consensus candidate.
However, Wike discounted that reason. Wike said Ihedioha was banking on the support and leverage of Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, to win the nomination and governorship election. Once Atiku lost his own election, Ihedioha withdrew from the race.
Wike said Ihedioha had no chance of defeating Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and had to chicken out of the race. He said the entire hope of Ihedioha was on using Atiku’s leverage to fight the incumbent.
Wike is quoted in the interview:
Assuming the PDP candidate (Atiku) won, would he (Ihedioha) have withdrawn?
“He knows that he cannot stand Hope Uzodimma, it is not possible. That was why he had to chicken out. Forget about (their claim) that they wanted consensus.
